The Story of Forty Acre Club: From Humble Beginnings to a Hidden Gem in Missouri
In the early 1950s, a small group of like-minded couples from St. Louis dreamed of finding a secluded spot where they could enjoy the warmth of the sun and the fresh air on their skin. They discovered a 40-acre piece of hilly farmland for sale in Franklin County, and on weekends, they set out to transform this untouched land into a welcoming gathering place. With hard work and a shared vision, they carved out campsites and a communal area on the flat hilltop.
By Thursday each week, the phone calls would start: "Are you heading out to the forty acres this weekend?" Friends would ask each other eagerly. On Fridays, before there were even asphalt roads, they packed up their tents, picnic baskets, saws, and shovels and headed out to that 40-acre plot they had purchased from a local farmer. When it came time to name their little retreat, the answer was obvious—Forty Acres.
In the beginning, the setup was quite primitive. The hilly terrain was perfect for constructing a dam, and soon, a man-made pond formed from the natural runoff, creating a swimming spot for all to enjoy. A concrete retaining wall was built, and a simple pavilion with a corrugated metal roof provided shelter for picnics and gatherings.
As time went on, the tents were gradually replaced by small trailers and cozy cabins. The first clubhouse was built, complete with a potbelly wood stove to make gatherings in the cool autumn months more comfortable. A community kitchen soon followed.
The development continued with the digging of a well, the installation of electric poles, and a cooperative effort by members to build a concrete block swimming pool. An asphalt tennis court with lights was also added, providing a new venue for friendly competition.
In the early 2000s, the original pool was replaced by the modern one we enjoy today. With membership growing, a large pavilion was constructed by the pool, becoming a central hub for summer activities—whether for lunch gatherings, outdoor dances, or karaoke nights.
In the late 1980s, the members built the first part of the current clubhouse, featuring a large stone fireplace. Over the years, the clubhouse was expanded twice to accommodate the growing community.
Summer sports became a major attraction, with activities like horseshoe tossing and night volleyball on the tennis court drawing large crowds. Over time, new games like pool, darts, shuffleboard, water volleyball, and putt-putt golf were added to the mix.
Labor Day became the last big celebration of the season, marked by an awards ceremony recognizing the winning teams and individuals in various competitions. This weekend also became home to the club's annual fish fry, a beloved tradition.
In the late 1990s, an additional 40 acres of wooded land were purchased next door, leading to the expansion of foot trails that could accommodate the growing number of golf carts. Today, these trails are the backdrop for the popular annual poker run.
Over the years, the club has continued to evolve. Concrete patios have been added to our rental cabins, and a large centrally located fire pit has even become a venue for nighttime movies under the stars.
Though we've come a long way since the 1950s, Forty Acre Club remains a rustic retreat and proudly considers itself “the best-kept secret in Missouri.”
